The problem

The Hull Independent Photography Festival was about to launch for the first time, whilst Hull was gearing up for the City of Culture.

Exhibitions spread across several galleries and partner venues, plus clubs, workshops and talks, and a programme that would be different every year. A single fixed logo wouldn’t work for such varied evens, and a festival that changes shape annually cannot be sustained long-term.

Our Solution

Research first, to work out what the festival was actually saying and who it was saying it to. The answer was a responsive identity: a mark built to shift and adapt so it could carry everything under the HIP banner rather than sitting awkwardly on top of it.

Then everything the festival met its audience through. Signage for each gallery, a wayfinding system across the venues, posters, and the programme handed to every guest on arrival. The website and social followed the same guidelines.

The programme went to print with exhibition changes still landing hours before the deadline, which is the part of festival work nobody puts in the brief and everybody should expect.

drew international coverage,

and was reviewed in The Guardian among others.
