The problem

Eighteen museums across the Humber region, a hundred objects between them, and the problem every regional museum has. The people who already visit keep visiting. Everybody else does not.

The answer was immersive technology. Scan the most intriguing objects in the collections in 3D and let anyone walk round them in virtual reality. Which left the design problem: one identity that had to hold across a VR headset, a website, out of home, print and social, and sit comfortably next to eighteen institutions that all had brands of their own.

Our Solution

The name was the solution. Framed, set inside a bracket device that reads as a picture frame and a camera viewfinder at the same time, which is the entire project in one mark. Museum objects, photographed and scanned.

It had to survive being an app icon on a phone and a panel on a billboard, and it had to stay itself in plain black and white, because it was rarely going to appear on its own.

Then art direction across the whole campaign. The scanned objects were the draw, so the design got out of their way and let them be the thing people looked at.

Framed played an integral role in the Humber Museums Partnership securing a further £4m of Arts Council England funding, and was praised by both the Arts Council and the DCMS, who invited the agency to a discussion on innovation in the sector.
